As she pours her heart out, Grandma listens
A young adult with angst in her heart
Learning to maneuver her way through this complicated world
She explains the Japanese art of kintsugi to her grandmother. In kintsugi, gold lacquer
is used to fuse together broken shards of pottery, creating a more beautiful object
through the acts of breaking and repairing. The value of an object is not in its beauty,
but in its imperfections. Celebrating, instead hiding, imperfections.
“Grandma,” she says, “You are my gold.”
I am not sure all grandmas are treasures, but I know that YOU, for a fact, are pure gold! You have always given your granddaughters such sincere affection and support, and they love you for it. What a wise thing for the younger one to say, and what a lovely little story it made, Sharon.
