My Husband and I were in our late 20’s, early 30’s when we lived at Lake Biltmore Apartments in San Jose. Our daughter was 6 years old, and our son a year and a half, when we moved in. During the 3-1/2 years we lived there, our babies grew, and our friendships with other couples, also young parents, grew into a comfortable bouquet of experiences. The apartments were set within an area of a few small, manmade lakes, full of frogs, to the children’s delight! We shared a community swimming pool. Many children, in our kids’ age group lived there, so they never lacked fun times playing outside, which is what kids that age used to do….play outside. The summers were quite warm, so most of the children were tan, with rosy cheeks…or freckled noses. The kids rode their bikes, and big wheels, all over the neighborhood, always in little packs of three or more. My best friend (then, and now), had three children, the same ages as my children, and we spent so much time together, they were more like brothers and sisters. They are still friends, 45 years later, and she and I still have coffee together, nearly every morning, through the miracle of FaceTime.
They were some of my favorite times, and she and I used to laugh, and say that we should write a book about our lives, over the years. “Time’s a wastin”, my friend.
Not all kids stare at phone and TV, computers. I joined a community garden and daughter loved gardening, fresh air. She still gardens. Saved earth worms and bugs. I wrote about our experiences in my book. “One green thumb and nine sticky fingers”, life should be fun. Continues to be so even now.
Time is NEVER wasted-except when it goes to the 'waist'!
