Stranded In Alameda
So why would they leave me, lying in a basket, in the middle of an empty house, and move away?
I was a quiet child. Not much point in speaking up, with four older siblings, and two adults vying for the mic. That made me a good child. Easy to care for. Not demanding, really. So why would they leave me, lying in a basket, in the middle of an empty house, and move away? Where did I go wrong? At first, I amused myself, looking at my hands, waving in the air, until one of the chubby fingers poked me in the eye. I cried out in my frustration, but nobody showed up to peer down at me. It was kind of strange. The house was so quiet.I couldn’t see anyone. No footsteps.
Then a loud bang, as the door hit the wall.
There she is! How could we have forgotten her?
Well I thought YOU had her!
It’s a good thing we didn’t get all the way to Santa Cruz, before we realized nobody had her!
I thought YOU had her!
I’m so sorry, baby! Come on. Let’s get you in the car.
This is a true story, and I am so grateful to have grown up with the family I had! I cannot imagine my life without the sisters and brothers who drove me crazy, and the parents, who remembered to go back to Alameda, and get me….eventually.
LOVED THIS!!!!
Something similar happened in my family. Saying goodbye to their hosts after their first overnight trip to friends after my brother's - their first child's - arrival, one of their friends piped up 'Are you sure you've got everything?' They checked the car. 'Yes, we think so. Looks like we've packed everything.' Short pause. 'What about the BABY?' 🤣
Happy new year, Sharon!
Wow!! Fun perspective of the story!
