My daughter’s dance number, with the four-year-olds, was “I Got Rhythm.” They didn’t…and it was adorable. As I watched them practice, I knew it was going to be a hit with the audience. My sister and I were readying ourselves for the recital, as well. our number was “Me And My Shadow.” This was a first for us, as well. The big day came. My sister and I were backstage, waiting to go on, while my daughter’s dance number was performing. There were a lot of parents watching, and I could hear the “Awww’s” and occasional laughter, but couldn’t see my little one dancing, from where I was. The number ended, and I heard a roar of laughter, and could hear my husband say, ”That’s my daughter!” What I didn’t know, was that as the curtain had closed on “I Got Rhythm,” All of the children were behind the curtain, except my daughter. She looked left, then right, and a pair of arms reached out from behind the curtain, and pulled her backstage. Unfortunately, there were no video cameras, back then, but I love hearing the story of Kathryn, on stage, all by herself, for that moment. It really was a foretelling of who she would grow up to be. She is in front of the curtain, in her life. Outgoing, she is first one to say hello, the first one to help others, at a celebration, or in times of sorrow. The kindest of hearts, and a star on the stage of her life. Happy Birthday, Kathryn.
