Quiet Sunday, Autumn afternoon
Daddy celebrates his birthday
Comfortably arranged
In front of a TV football game
A lazy beam of sunlight
Fingers its way through the drapes
And dances for a moment on the carpet
Coaxing me from my dream state
I take the baby
His blanket in tow
And with Kathryn’s hand in mine
Off we go to the play yard
Settling onto the warm wooden bench
Benjamin and I
Take in the crisp clean air
And Kathryn’s monkey bar antics
His eyes wander
From dancing leaves
To Kathryn’s gleeful giggles
Back to dancing leaves
The intoxicating blend of scents
Redwood bark, fresh cut grass
And musky damp earth
Complete the awakening of my sleeping senses
